Dental Implants

ImplantDental implants represent one of the most important advances in periodontics. It offers patients with missing, or extremely damaged, teeth the opportunity to once again enjoy a fully functional bite. The most difficult aspect of tooth loss, or severe oral damage, is that it can significantly change the function of the mouth and the appearance of facial structures. Even the loss of a few teeth can cause facial sagging, and give the appearance of advanced age. Significant tooth loss also affects the ability to eat. Dental implant replacements are the first step in filling in the areas of the mouth where facial tissue has begun to "sink". Recent advances in implant technology have made them the ideal solution for a number of dental conditions.

What exactly are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal anchors, which act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implant, which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

Implant LadyWhat are the advantages of dental implants over more traditional restorative procedures, such as bridges or dentures?

• They prevent shrinkage of the jawbone
• Adjacent teeth do not have to be ground down as in the case of bridges
• Unlike dentures, they are not removeable, so they are more stable and comfortable
• If you already have a denture, as few as 2 implants can improve its retention and stability.

What are the steps involved in placing dental implants?

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, Dr. Chen designs the final bridgework or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. Dr. Chen will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. Then, Dr. Chen will be able to begin making your new teeth. An impression must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants. The teeth replacements are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
